  • I take all my photos with a Fujifilm FinePix F30, in natural light and without any extra equipment (except when I use a large sheet of watercolour paper to cut out direct light). I don't Photoshop or alter my photos in any way, and the only adjustment I make is when/if I crop them.

in and out of the kitchen

Phoebe has been busy again. She made mini lemon loaf cakes and iced them so that there could be no doubt as to their nature. While she waited impatiently for them to cool so that she could try out the new, disposable, cellophane icing bags (which resulted in three children having a yellow icing war in the garden) she indulged in her second favourite pastime - trying on and modelling shoes.

When she put on one of her dressing-up, glittery, silver high heels and one of my blue plastic Crocs, I thought she summed up the modern woman's dilemma perfectly.

I know which one I prefer.

I did wonder if you had discovered these! My bright pink pair for Summer arrived last week. Blissful comfort. I lived in the non-holey ones all Winter too. Such a sad state of comfort over form.

Totally the Crocs!!

I have decided that the Crocs are both comfortable AND cute (particularly with jeans). Of course, it doesn't diminish my love of a flashy heel at all.

Mmmm...little lovely luscious lemon cakes. As for the crocs - make mine black or green. I think there's only 2 or 3 times in my life that I've worn heels!

Well, I have the same shade of blue Crocs, but clearly I've missed out, not having the matching pajamas. And though the glittery high heels look lovely, my toes are telling me no deal.

Hi Jane:
I want a slice of Phoebe's lemon confection NOW....
She is such a polished baker.....her style is so grown
up these days!!!! elegant and lovely.....I like the funky element that her blue crocks and glittery
silvery heels add to her baker uniform....and yes, I do agree with you; her shoes definately speak to the dilemma at hand. Hope all is well with you Jane....eagerly awaiting your new book
Take care,
JL

I definitely prefer low heels. (One of my favourite shoes are Clarc Original's - really well fitting and mostly nature materials) I haven't bought any high heels in five years I think. I doubt there will be many more in the future... I think low heels can be sexy too. As long as the wearer feels comfortable!

Crocs

I'm amazed at the restraint - that no mischevious person in your household has rearranged them into 'melon' cakes.

Your daughter seems so lovely. It's wonderful to see the baking/creative/aesthetic gene pass on...

Oh, I know which I prefer, and they are on my feet even now (at an office!), purple and boat-like and feel as though I am walking/standing on a pillow of happy clouds.

Love the gingham and polka dots together on the gridded floor. Hope all is well.

The Crocks I like are the new flats. The lemon cakes look so yummy.

I am a dissenting vote on the Crocs. I don't like them at all. I don't like how big my feet looked when I wore them and I didn't find them comfortable enough to live with the super wide duck feet syndrome.

Give me the sparkly heels. I may not wear them often, but I would admire them every time I saw them.

Oh how I love my pair of bright red crocs - I have not gone one day without them since I bought them last summer! - they rock!!

But then so do glittery high heels...

I'm Crocs all the way! What beautiful tulips - it's amazing the colours and shapes they come in these days. As a child I remember them being red and yellow...

I'm definitely torn. I love the sparkles but I also love the twinned jammies and crocs. what a great colour....HMMMM

Crocs. Must buy crocs. Pink? Blue? Red?
