new york blues
Disney dolls...
...as a dress.
Blue formica table and Key Lime Pie at Billy's Bakery
Amazing building on Houston
Carpet and my bag, as seen from a comfortable chair (I love the way the shops for younger customers provide somewhere for older companions to sit)
Phoebe's new tee shirt, her hands as her palette
Brilliant blue sky above the ever-beautiful Chrysler Building (obligatory viewing)
Evening sky with view down Fifth Avenue towards the Empire State Building
***
And in between there was Purl, Habu Textiles, Phoebe's shops, bookshops, an exhibition at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, Alice's shops, delis, bakeries, burgers, Starbucks (Alice insisted), Central Park, Grand Central Station, Phoebe and Alice's shops, meeting friends and the discovery of what must be the best movie channel ever, Turner Classic Movies. If it hadn't been such a short trip, I would have been sorely tempted to watch a whole day of Bette Davis films on Saturday.
As ever when I'm in New York, the blues were purely external.

WOW! Again, I ask--that's *my* city?! Thanks for making me see this place with a new eye.

This time of year, the twilight sky in NYC turns that Maxfield Parrish shade of blue...exquisite!

Love the sound of the Turner movie channel - why can't we have all-day re-runs of great film stars? Especially when it's raining ;)

It would be mean to visit your blog without saying, stunning pictures! You must be exhausted.

Jane, will you share the list of Alice's shops, Phoebe's shops, and their shared shops? I'm planning a trip with my 11-year-old daughter and would love to know.

Turner Classic Movies is fun, isn't it..

My daughter and I are making the 2 1/2 hour drive to Purl this Saturday. I now wish we had gone last weekend!! I would love to meet you. I'm one of your biggest fans!!

It must have been a fascinating experience for you to rediscover this city through the eyes of your daughters and as always your words and images make me long to visit New York again, this time armed with my usual notes, books and the addition of my Yarnstorm notes.
How did you find Habu? I have just sent a friend there with a shopping list and am a little concerned that he (middle aged, middle England sort of male) might be rather traumatized by the experience....

Hi Jane,
Thanks for your so inspiring and cheerful photos, I will come soon to see what's new!

I love both NYC and the Turner Classic Movie channel. After reading your NYC posts, I was reminded of how lucky I am that I grew up in Connecticut and got to go to NYC often.

My daughter (fourteen, roughly halfway between Alice and Phoebe, I think) has New York'd en famille and is desperate for a mother/daughter trip. I'm feeling inspired by your reports.
I know A and F is a pain and the music is WAY too loud, but at least it's much cheaper than the Blighty equivalent - which really does require a second mortgage - and not so bloomin' DARK.....

Turner Classic Movies - the reason I rarely listen to books on tape or podcasts while knitting, which is a shame, really. But I blame TCM - they're always showing an unknown (to me) movie I've starring some classic actor/actress.
Go to www.tcm.com
They also have a shop - I'm not sure that the DVDs are formatted for your region of the world, but you'll have fun looking.

TCM is usually the first channel I click to when turning on the tv. I never want to miss a really good movie. I wonder what will happen to it as we grow older and a generation that remembers black and white movies fades out.

New York has some many sides to it, I don't know how anyone could tire of it.

I lived in New York for years, and yet each time I see your pictures of that beautiful city, my favorite city, I can't believe it's the same place! I love that.

You know what's fun? Scrolling down through your post and the amazing building on Houston does amazing things (because of the angle of the shot) -- try it!

If you subscribe to sky or sky+ (even better) you can have TCM in the UK.I am a sky+ subsciber and if you are a movie fan or like the old TV series it is worth every penny. Also excellent cookery, gardening and documentary channels.I love your book by the way,and have bought and read many of your recommended books with great pleasure.I am looking forward to your new publication.

Our nearest city is Boston, and I'm embarrassed to admit that I've been to NYC only twice. Your pictures make it look very enticing.

I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that Disney dress!

Thanks for the virtual trip to New York! I haven't been there since Williamsburg was still a slum.
What wonderful pictures. Sam likes the architectural views, I like everything, and guess which one Sara likes? The Cinderella dress, of course!
