For a brief moment yesterday I was truly plugged in. Barefoot as usual when it's lovely and warm, I stepped down from a stool after retrieving a large pile of Selvedge magazines from a high shelf and stood straight onto an upturned plug. I quickly pulled it out and unplugged myself and hobbled into the kitchen, feeling quite strange about having to sort out a deep plug hole in the sole of my foot.
Today I have a very sore foot indeed, and am doing everything I can to avoid walking. Ironic, really, as I spend much of my life looking for an excuse to sit down and read/knit/crochet/quilt/watch a film, yet the minute I need to put my feet up, I feel I should be moving around (preferably preventing any future accidents in my study).
But going through all the issues of Selvedge is a great way to spend an enforced idle, sunny afternon in the garden. Highly recommended, preferably when you are unplugged metaphorically, rather than literally.
I too am recuperating with a sore foot, twisted in a fall stepping off a curb I forgot was there yesterday. Sorry about your sore foot. As long as we have a reason (not excuse)how lovely to be able to sit and knit or look through magazines. Hope (and sure) you are being well taken care of. Your blog and your list of 10 favorites always inspire. Thanks!

Good Heavens Jane! I literally said "ouch" as I read this but your recuperation plans sound excellent.

Owww, I feel your pain, having done similar with bits of Lego all too frequently.
Try some Arnica on it - very good for bruising (though not if it actually puctured your skin)

OUCH! can't count the times I've done that!

Oh my! I hope that your foot feels better soon! Until then, just enjoy the chance to relax without guilt. :-)

Oh my! Reading about that makes me hurt. Hope your foot feels better soon until then enjoy your rest.

Nasty nasty nasty... I have done the very same thing and am very wary of unplugged plugs whilst in bare feet!
Selvedge is indeed a wonderful soother and a lovely distraction.

I thought Lego was bad enough (and there is the beginning of a very bad pun there) but Pluggo! That sounds truly horrible. And I speak as one who regularly stands on rakes.

Ouch! I hope your foot gets better soon. Lovely to be able to sit and browse through old copies of Selvedge though.

Ouch.Hope you are mobile again soon.Having had a major knee op in January I know how you are feeling.

Did you know that approx 250 people per year are injured in knitting related incidents? I suppose yours was more textile related. I managed to pull my car boot on to my head last week. I had a nasty lump for a few days. I think sometimes these things happen to make us slow down a bit!

Ow. I saw a few of those in A&E and they are most painful. Get well and mobile soon
Posted by: oxslip | June 28, 2010 at 20:54
Oh no! Poor you! I remember hearing somewhere that that is one of the most common causes of injury in the home :(
Posted by: alice | June 28, 2010 at 21:18
Ooh, ow. I can feel that right now. Standing on a plug is so painful. Ow ow ow!
Posted by: Rachael | June 28, 2010 at 22:44
Ouch indeed, I am cringing at the thought. Enjoy the rest, but hope your foot gets better quickly (as much as I like sitting down, I dread enforced immobility ...!).

Horrible accident!
What do you think of Selvedge mag? I suscribed for a year recently, at enormous expense, and was SO disappointed in the random quality of the writing and editing, which ranged from the amateur to almost academic. And so many pictures without captions: a cardinal sin! Such enormous potential for a magazine, but this one seemed to be a triumph of style over substance, and a frustrating read.

My feet are curling at the thoughts of that accident. I hope you are up and running soon.

I think we could all feel that Jane... wishing you well and lots of restful reading!

Oh Jane, Rest Ice Compression Elevate - I think that's it. Spend the day on the sofa with a book - seriously just one day like that could really help you be mobile tomorrow.

Ouch! I often go barefoot too at this time of year, try to wear as little as possible, and so have to be aware of dangers like... snails...YUK.... which I know isn't as painful as stepping on a plug, but the feel of it.... oh just horrible. Just enjoy being forced to sit and do nothing other than look through old magazines and when the 'I could be/should be/want to be...' thoughts enter your head, ignore 'em.

I also have a sore foot, but yours sounds far worse than mine. Mine has almost healed, because it happened almost two weeks ago. I was helping some small children at a bowling alley when one of them picked up a bowling ball and promptly dropped it right on my big toe. I didn't utter a word, but I did sit down very quickly and then I focused on breathing until I could manage to talk and reassure the poor kid that I was okay.

Ooh, I've done that too, and knelt on a plug on one a occasion, it's incredibly painful. Definitely, a reason to rest up!
Posted by: Jane | June 29, 2010 at 10:31
Ah yes ... Selvedge is soooo delicious, I'm sure I've tried to eat it before now! It would make any sore foot better.
Posted by: potter jotter | June 29, 2010 at 10:46
Oooer! I too tend to barefoot everywhere much to my family's annoyance. So everytime I hurt myself I get no sympathy because I 'should have been wearing shoes like a normal person'. Tsk. They wouldn't know normal if it came up and bit them.
Hope you're up and about soon.
xx

So sorry to hear about your little accident. Settle back with lots of pillows and a cup of tea and give your brain a rest - it will thank you later.
Posted by: Anna R | June 29, 2010 at 15:23
Wince! Get well! x
Posted by: Anna | June 29, 2010 at 17:40
Ahh...Selvedge -- I could page through back issues endlessly. Hope you feel better soon!
Posted by: KnitSix | June 29, 2010 at 18:20
Oh , that must have hurt ! But who wants to wear shoes in the summer ?
Selvedge'll cheer you up . I discovered a pile of 1950s Paris Match the other day and sat , feet up , loving the old ads.

Best wishes for quick healing. I suggest sitting in the sun with your foot up and someone waiting on you.
Posted by: LoriAngela | June 29, 2010 at 21:48
Nightmare- at least you did it after you got Selvedge down. Hope the foot is feeling better now.
I fractured my hand 5 weeks ago and have to do lots of sitting around as can't do any driving, writing, typing or knitting whilst I have he wire holding it together.
Posted by: Min Pickup | June 30, 2010 at 01:28
Yikes! Hope it heals well. And isn't it just so true that choosing to be still and work on a sit-down project is *completely* different than enforced inactivity.
Posted by: Margo | June 30, 2010 at 17:21
Sounds so painful - hope it heals quickly. In the meantime take it easy.
Posted by: Adam Mercer | June 30, 2010 at 23:30
That does sound nasty.
Hope you can surround yourself with beauty while you're off your feet!

Do be careful even while you are sitting and knitting. I suffered a deep puncture wound from a double-pointed needle (size 1) when I was drawing my chair up to a worktable, and the needle, which had been dangling loosely over the edge of the table, stiffened itself against the underside of the table by one end, and against the soft, unsuspecting skin of my thigh at the other. Guess what gave in to the pressure. The most difficult thing was _figuring out_ what was hurting so badly so I could fix it. It was barely believable. No tetanus, but much more care in the future. Happy (and safe) knitting to you.
